is a rare thing in this area so to have it occur on a weekend (that I don’t have to work) and for it to be accompanied by sailable winds is quite a treat! On Saturday we went hiking on the coast and then stayed the night on the boat to get an early start (i.e. before noon) on Sunday. The forecast for Sunday called for sunny skies, highs in the low/mid 60s, and winds building from 5mph in the am to 8mph in the afternoon. Weather forecasts are notoriously inaccurate around here but we figured if they got 1 out of the 3 (skies, temp, winds) right we’d have a decent day. As it turned out they got 2 out of the 3, it was beautifully sunny and the temps reach the low sixties. The winds were stronger than forecast, 10 to 15 knots and gusting a bit higher so it was pretty close to a perfect day for a sail (a bit chilly going upwind).
It has been a few weeks since our last sail and it always takes us a while to get reaccustomed to heeling but each time we go out we get a little better about it. We are comfortable at 15 degrees and we’ve spent some time at 20 degrees or a little over and been ok about it. What was cool about today, was that it was a pretty gusty day and it didn’t bother us. Heeling in steady winds is one thing, but heeling in gusty conditions is a different experience. Suddenly going from 15 degrees to 30 degrees can be pretty unsettling, but today it was no big deal. Actually it was pretty fun 🙂
