The past several weekends Devon has been working on the chain plates and the life raft mount, and I have been working on refinishing the companionway doors.

Exploratory surgery to determine the location for the new chain plate bolts.

The chain plates themselves are actually finished, which is a huge accomplishment. The next step is drilling holes in the boat to install them. Devon was going to get started on that this past weekend. He got as far as putting everything in place, had the drill against the hull, and then his drill guide (to ensure the pilot hole is exactly centered) fell into the water. We tried to retrieve it with a super massive magnet on a rope but no luck. Oh well, it’s one of those things that happens when you’re working over the water.

I have stripped and sanded the companionway doors, the next step is a bleaching process to attempt to remove (or lighten) dark spots where the finish had failed.

Then comes another round of sanding before applying Cetol (technically not varnish, but the same idea). I will also be replacing the latches for the doors and the slider, the old ones were pretty low quality.

Slooowly working our way down the list…

Welcome!

We are Devon & Rowan and this site is about our life aboard our sailboat, how we got here, and where we hope to go in the future…

We started our boating life in the Portland Oregon area with an Ericson Independence 31 before moving to the SF Bay area. In 2013 we purchased and moved aboard Casita, our Hans Christian 33. In October 2024 we finally cast off the dock lines and headed south. We are currently cruising Mexico with plans to do a Pacific crossing.

We aren’t retired and we aren’t wealthy so we will cruise until we run low on funds or low on fun and then look at our options. Please join us for this next phase of our adventures together.
