Well summer is definitely over here in the Pacific NW and the rain has started. For the past 6 months we have been spending pretty much all of our free time on ‘Imi Loa, either sailing or projects/maintenance, but with the arrival of the rain we figured we’d get out and do some hiking. We plan to do winter sailing but that will have to wait until we have a dodger. It was raining/sleeting when we moved ‘Imi Loa to a new marina last spring and it was pretty uncomfortable, and that was just motoring.

We used to do quite a bit of hiking and we have definitely missed it so yesterday we hiked the King’s Mountain trail, a 5 mile round trip hike with an elevation gain of ~2500 feet.  This used to be a fairly easy hike for us, but apparently sailing and doing boat work don’t do much for cardiovascular fitness and lower body strength (we may need to take a closer look at the TRX that Mike and Rebecca use on ZTC). The hike was great but today the stairs and I aren’t getting along so well – we live in a 3 story home so there are lots of stairs! It was worth it though, I got a great workout in all the wet splendor of the PNW rainforest.

Edit: Photos and descriptions of some of our previous hikes can be found here.

The variety of mushrooms we saw along the way was pretty impressive. I know nothing about mushrooming except never pick any unless you know what you are doing so no mushrooms were harmed in the making of this blog.

These were cute cartoonish mushrooms, the one on the left is still emerging from the forest litter.

These two were as big as dinner plates, Devon left his foot in the photo for size comparison.
Two big mushroom colonies at the base of the tree.
A nice bright splash of color on a grey day!

Welcome!

We are Devon & Rowan and this site is about our life aboard our sailboat, how we got here, and where we hope to go in the future…

We started our boating life in the Portland Oregon area with an Ericson Independence 31 before moving to the SF Bay area. In 2013 we purchased and moved aboard Casita, our Hans Christian 33. In October 2024 we finally cast off the dock lines and headed south. We are currently cruising Mexico with plans to do a Pacific crossing.

We aren’t retired and we aren’t wealthy so we will cruise until we run low on funds or low on fun and then look at our options. Please join us for this next phase of our adventures together.
