Casita came with an Alpha Marine Systems Alpha 3000 autopilot installed. This is an older system (installed in the 80s) and has a reputation for being robust, reliable, and not very power hungry. Unfortunately we were never able to get the system working to our satisfaction.

AMS Alpha 3000 autopilot control unit
The Alpha 3000 control unit, very old school tech.

Some of the problems we had were due to poor installation, which we improved where we could, and others were due to components malfuctioning. We had problems with the drive unit linkage assembly (mostly just bad installation and adjustment), control box failure (bad resistor), wired remote failure (broken wire in remote, then broken wire in receptacle), and compass failure (teeny tiny wires as fine as a hair inside the compass had broken). We were able to fix everything ourselves except for the compass which we sent to the manufacturer for repair. However, even after it was repaired we weren’t abe to keep the compass calibrated (maybe due to poor location, too close to our iron ballast).

Even with the various issue we had experienced we were planning to keep the Alpha 3000, but then we found out the manufacturer had closed up shop and we couldn’t find anyone providing support or service. We felt lucky that we were able to diagnose the control box failure and that it was a simple fix, but we might not be so lucky next time and if the compass should fail again I’m pretty sure we would be out of options (we tried and failed to get it repaired locally before sending it in). We have a Monitor Windvane so the autopilot is not our primary self steering system, but being shorthanded we need a reliable backup system. Plus, even though we are a sailboat and we’d love to say we sail all the time, the reality is there are plenty of times when we motor.

All of this is to say we decided to install a more modern autopilot and chose a Raymarine Evolution system. We already have most of it installed and we should be receiving the final component tomorrow, hopefully we will be doing the calibration and testing the system out this weekend!

Hello – any chance you still have the old Alpha 3000 control pictured? Looking for a spare.
    Thanks,
    Steve

Hi Steve, sorry but we already sold the Alpha 3000.

I just bought a boat with what appears to be an Alpha system; it doesn’t have a course dial — the other switches are similar — and no model number. Of course there was no manual.
Did you find any information on interfacing the existing drive unit with newer systems?

      Hi Damon,

We were able to interface the Alpha 3000 ram with current Raymarine electronics (P70 control head, ACU400 course computer, and EV1 compass). I don’t remember all the details of how we got it to work but I can look through our notes if you are interested.

The main complication was that the Alpha 3000 ram engages and disengages with the steering quadrate via a mechanic linkage but the Raymarine system is intended to be used with a clutch and stays physically engaged all the time.

I will email you a document that we used as our starting point (I got it from a guy on cruisersforum and found it very helpful even though we didn’t do exactly what he did).

      Good luck,

      Rowan

btw there are pdf versions of the alpha 3000 manual floating around on the internet

Welcome!

We are Devon & Rowan and this site is about our life aboard our sailboat, how we got here, and where we hope to go in the future…

We started our boating life in the Portland Oregon area with an Ericson Independence 31 before moving to the SF Bay area. In 2013 we purchased and moved aboard Casita, our Hans Christian 33. In October 2024 we finally cast off the dock lines and headed south. We are currently cruising Mexico with plans to do a Pacific crossing.

We aren’t retired and we aren’t wealthy so we will cruise until we run low on funds or low on fun and then look at our options. Please join us for this next phase of our adventures together.
